A woman of the 10 Million Women movement

Nigerian women are not short of numbers. They are short of a register.

Women turn out, women trade, women farm, women vote, women hold communities together through every hard season. What has never existed is a single, verifiable national list of who those women are, where they are, and what they are asking for.

That is what this movement builds. A member in Bama and a member in Badagry appear on the same register, under the same rules, counted the same way. From that list comes something the country has not had to answer to before: an organised constituency of ten million women with an address in every local government.

The register is the point. Everything else follows from it.

Four priority pillars

What the movement actually does between elections

Livelihood support

Work that pays, in the places women already are.

Rural enterprise, women-led SMEs, skills acquisition, agricultural value chains, the creative and digital economy, and cooperative trading groups. The aim is household income that holds.

  • Rural women empowerment
  • Women-led SMEs
  • Skills and enterprise incubation
  • Agricultural value chains
  • Creative and digital economy
  • Cooperative societies

Financial inclusion

A bank account is a form of citizenship.

Connecting women to formal finance: literacy, microcredit, savings and credit schemes, mobile money, insurance, and readiness for the intervention funds that already exist but rarely reach them.

  • Financial literacy
  • Microfinance and cooperative funding
  • Savings and credit schemes
  • Digital and mobile banking
  • Entrepreneurship financing
  • Links to intervention funds

Social empowerment

Numbers are only power once they are organised.

Leadership development, mentorship, girl-child education, civic awareness, and a serious push for women in governance, including women with disabilities and those the room usually forgets.

  • Leadership and mentorship
  • Girl-child education
  • Women in governance
  • Gender equality advocacy
  • Civic education
  • Grassroots mobilisation

Social protection

Nobody should lose everything to one bad month.

Standing between women and the shocks: violence, widowhood, illness, displacement, discrimination. Legal aid, health access, psychosocial support and emergency relief.

  • Support for widows
  • Gender-based violence response
  • Maternal and reproductive health
  • Healthcare access
  • Legal aid and rights protection
  • Psychosocial support

What we are asking for

34%

Women in governance

Advocacy for 34 per cent representation of women in elective and appointive positions, at every level of government.

774

Local government areas

A functioning structure in every LGA in the federation, not just the capitals. Roughly 12,920 members each.

37

States and the FCT

State chapters constituted, inaugurated and working with their Ministries of Women Affairs.

Specialised wings

However you came to this, there is a room for you in it

Every member belongs to a state and a local government. She also chooses a wing, so traders are organised with traders, students with students, and no group is spoken for by people who do not share its problems.

  • Youth Wing
  • Market Women Wing
  • Women with Disabilities Wing
  • Professional Women Wing
  • Rural Women Wing
  • Cooperative Women Wing
  • Students and Campus Wing
  • Diaspora Support Network
  • Senior Women Advisory Wing
  • Faith-Based Women Network
